UPDATE: The comments for this post are all posts in their own right. Please take some time and look through them. Today, May 15, 2007, the day of Jerry Falwell’s death, I have posted a letter (with permission) by Marc Adams of HeartStrong.org about how his experiences with Jerry Falwell and Liberty University inspired him to start HeartStrong.org (http://heartstrong.org/).

I think what I want to do is to speak to the tragedy that this story represents for those directly involved in this specific situation and for anyone affected by the “pray the gay away” mentality. In spite of the media circus surrounding these recent events, this is a very sad story.
For every public scandal, and shaming and humiliation of high profile individuals and their families, there are a multitude of others who are trying unsuccessfully to be the way their pastors, teachers and parents, their relatives, politicians and society at large, have told them they must be.
The fact that there are people who are not “completely heterosexual” is not what is sad. The intolerance shown to those who are different, and the complete lack of love, masquerading as ‘hate the sin, love the sinner’, are what make life intolerable for people who are not “completely heterosexual” who also believe the things Mr. Haggard preached about sexuality. For those people, there is no satisfactory solution (according to preachers like Mr. Haggard and his ‘counselors’).
I appreciate the way that Mr. Zimmerman has used humor to present a situation (where intolerance, bigotry and deception of self and others led to a very public crisis) in a way that makes the sadness of the situation bearable. He touched on every point in this very public story, including the Bible verses used to attack homosexual people and what Jesus said about being homosexual (nothing at all).
For people on the inside of churches that condemn them for who they are, people who desperately need to know there is a safe place for them in this world, there are resources available. Soulforce and Heartstrong were both founded by men who spent years as conservative Christians in conservative Christian organizations. They believed that their own homosexuality was “an abomination to God”. They tried unsuccessfully to be the people their pastors and religious friends said they should be.
As of this writing, Mel White (Soulforce) is Christian and Marc Adams (Heartstrong) is Unitarian Universalist. Both have left behind “the gospel of intolerance and self loathing.” They now both have organizations which address the attacks by some religious organizations on people who are not ‘completely heterosexual’. They present information you will never hear in places where you are told you are “an abomination to God.”
Mr. Haggard’s public humiliation serves as a reminder that ‘pray the gay away’ does not work. God loves you just the way you are. You do not need to pray yourself away. I saw a button that said, “If God didn’t make gay people, there wouldn’t be any.” If you believe we (humans) are created by God, and are made in the image of God, it’s certainly something to think about. “If God didn’t make gay people, there wouldn’t be any.” .

Socially Acceptable – c.2006 Deborah L. Hord
There was a guy in corporate life who did not want to take a wife.
The photos in his cubicle were of his dog and best friend Bill.
The work he did was good, but people talked behind his back.
And, everywhere he went he felt the force of their attacks.
You gotta be socially acceptable. Learn how to conform. Deny your own reality. Stay inside the norm. You gotta be socially acceptable in order to go far, socially acceptable, don’t be the way you are.
There is a woman, good and kind, who speaks against injustice.
She isn’t very hard to find. Just look for where the dust is.
She spoke about the truth she saw, and truth was all around.
They did not like the things she said and ran her out of town.
You gotta be socially acceptable. Learn how to conform. You gotta deny your own reality. Stay inside the norm. You gotta be socially acceptable in order to go far, socially acceptable, don’t be the way you are.
Remember when you were a child you heard a children’s story about the Emperor’s new clothes. They had a grand parade. And, everyone could see the truth, but none of them would say it, because they doubted what they knew, and they were all afraid.
They tried to be socially acceptable. They learned how to conform. They denied their own reality. They stayed inside the norm. They tried to be socially acceptable. They wanted to go far, socially acceptable, they couldn’t be the way they were.
Some people do not play the game or wear a false persona.
They try to live authentically. They are not well received.
The rules say that you must conform, and truth is not for telling.
Don’t let them break your spirit down. They want you to believe,
You gotta be socially acceptable. Learn how to conform. You gotta deny your own reality. Stay inside the norm. You gotta be socially acceptable in order to go far, socially acceptable, you can’t be the way you are.

Here’s a spoof on Larry Craig’s toe tapping with a “duet with the Village People”. http://crackle.com/c/Moving_Targets/Sen._Craigs_New_Music_Video/2048231/
I’ve added this, because this is yet another example of a very public figure who is vocally and politically opposed to equal rights for non-heterosexual people while living a double life.
Why does this happen? How many politicians and preachers work to oppose equal rights under the law for LGBT persons while living double lives? Would this happen if LGBT persons were fully accepted in this world?
I heard a PFLAG parent say once that the minds of older adults will probably not be changed, but change will occur as younger generations grow up accepting those around them. Change and acceptance will eventually come when those who are young are in a position to influence policies and change laws.

TOPIC: And, the Band Played On … Happy Valentine’s Day

.
I hope you are with someone you love. If you’re the only person in the room, I hope you’ll look in the mirror and offer some love to the one you’re with.
.
This afternoon, I saw the movie “And the Band Played On” based on the book (same title) by Randy Shilts. The book sat on my shelf for a decade, and I never read it. The movie has been out for at least that long, too, and I never saw it until today.
.
What I got from watching this movie was that a small number of hard-working, conscientious, dedicated people worked diligently for years to solve the puzzle of the “gay cancer”, but it was only after the CDC could prove a link to the blood supply and people other than gay men that the President of the United States publicly acknowledged that there was a problem and committed money to research (after 25,000 people in the USA died from the Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome, AIDS).
.
I don’t know why it was recommended that I watch the movie. The person who recommended it has repeatedly made comments suggesting that gay people are a protected class of citizens with a powerful lobbying organization. Maybe I was supposed to get that from the movie. I don’t know. What I saw in the movie was that there was minimal funding for research to discover the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) as long as it was believed that this was a disease that only affected gay men.
.
It amazes me that some people still believe that gay people are protected in some special way. Most hate crimes legislation specifically excludes sexual orientation and gender identity. Opponents of including sexual orientation and gender identity in hate crimes legislation say that would give lgbt persons special rights. Would the right not to be killed just for existing, like Matthew Shepard and Brandon Teena, be a special protection? And, even though more and more large businesses now offer partner benefits, most states in the USA do not legally recognize same-sex couples. And, it is not illegal to fire a person or refuse to rent to a person because of perceived sexual orientation or gender identification (two things which are not the same thing, by the way). How would it be ’special rights’ for people who live, work, pay taxes, have families, contribute to society (and the list goes on) to be recognized as equal by the government of this country and by fellow citizens?
.
Why do we, as human beings, have to divide ourselves in to US and THEM in every possible way? Are we not all human? Should we not all be treated with dignity and respect? Do we not all owe basic kindness and courtesy to each other?
.
How can anyone believe that lgbt persons are somehow a powerful and protected group of people when things like this still happen: Openly gay student declared brain dead after being shot by classmate. This story was reported today, Valentine’s Day, the day of love.
.
I hope I live to see the day when all people are treated with respect because they are human beings, not attacked because they are perceived to be different and somehow unworthy of life and equality.
.

Ex-Microsoft Worker Gives Away Millions
AP Posted: 2008-02-24 20:32:46
SEATTLE, Washington (Feb. 24) – The estate of Ric Weiland, a high school classmate of Microsoft Corp. founders Bill Gates and Paul Allen and one of the first five people to work at the software giant, has left $65 million to gay rights and HIV/AIDS organizations.
The bequests were announced Sunday by the Pride Foundation of Seattle, where Weiland was a board member for several years. The foundation called it the largest single bequest ever given to gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender causes.
Gates and Allen hired Weiland in 1975, the year they founded Microsoft. He worked as a project leader for the Microsoft Works word processing and spreadsheet software, and was a lead programmer and developer for the company’s BASIC and COBOL systems, two of the first personal computing interfaces. He left Microsoft in 1988.
Weiland donated tens of millions to various organizations — from gay rights groups to environmental and education organizations — before he died in 2006. He committed suicide at age 53 after a long battle with depression, and survivors include his partner, Mike Schaefer.
The $65 million is among bequests totaling about $160 million — the bulk of Weiland’s estate — to various charities and Stanford University, his undergraduate alma mater, according to an estimate provided by the Pride Foundation.
In the latest bequest, the Pride Foundation said Weiland’s estate had established a fund at the foundation that would give $46 million over the next eight years to 10 national gay rights and HIV/AIDS groups, including Lambda Legal; the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force; Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays; the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation; and amfAR, the Foundation for AIDS Research.
His estate also bequeathed $19 million directly to the Pride Foundation for scholarships and grants supporting the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community in the Pacific Northwest.

Disgraced pastor faces more gay sex accusations
By ERIC GORSKI, AP Religion Writer Eric Gorski, Ap Religion Writer 1 hr 36 mins ago
DENVER – Disgraced evangelical leader Ted Haggard’s former church disclosed Friday that the gay sex scandal that caused his downfall extends to a young male church volunteer who reported having a sexual relationship with Haggard — a revelation that comes as Haggard tries to repair his public image.
Brady Boyd, who succeeded Haggard as senior pastor of the 10,000-member New Life Church in Colorado Springs, told The Associated Press that the man came forward to church officials in late 2006 shortly after a Denver male prostitute claimed to have had a three-year cash-for-sex relationship with Haggard.
Boyd said an “overwhelming pool of evidence” pointed to an “inappropriate, consensual sexual relationship” that “went on for a long period of time … it wasn’t a one-time act.” Boyd said the man was in his early 20s at the time. He said he was certain the man was of legal age when it began.
Reached Friday night, Haggard declined to comment and said all interviews would have to be arranged through a publicist for HBO, which is airing a documentary about him this month.
Boyd said the church reached a legal settlement to pay the man for counseling and college tuition, with one condition being that none of the parties involved discuss the matter publicly.
Boyd said a Colorado Springs TV station reached him Thursday to say the young man was planning to provide a detailed report of his relationship with Haggard to the station. Boyd said the church preferred to keep the matter private, but it was the man’s decision to go public.
The disclosure comes as Haggard, 52, is about to give a series of high-profile interviews to promote the cable documentary about his time in exile. He is scheduled to appear on CNN’s Larry King Live on Thursday, the date of the documentary’s premiere, and already has taped “The Oprah Winfrey Show.”
In early 2007, New Life Church disclosed that an investigation uncovered new evidence that Haggard engaged in “sordid conversation” and “improper relationships” — but didn’t go into detail. Earlier, a church board member had said there was no evidence that Haggard had sexual relations with anyone but Mike Jones, the former male prostitute.
Haggard confessed to undisclosed “sexual immorality” after Jones’ allegations and resigned as president of the National Association of Evangelicals and from New Life Church, where he faced being fired.
Anticipating criticism of the settlement with the former church volunteer, Boyd said Friday that it was in the best interests of all involved. He would not name the volunteer or the settlement amount.
“It wasn’t at all a settlement to make him be quiet or not tell his story,” Boyd said. “Our desire was to help him. Here was a young man who wanted to get on with his life. We considered it more compassionate assistance — certainly not hush money. I know what’s what everyone will want to say because that’s the most salacious thing to say, but that’s not at all what it was.”
He said that “secondarily, it’s not great for our church either” that the story be told. Boyd said Haggard knew about the settlement two years ago.
In a letter e-mailed Friday to New Life Church members, Boyd said of the settlement and agreement not to talk: “This decision was made not as an attempt to conceal wrongdoings, but to protect him from those who would seek to exploit him. His actions now suggest that he has changed his mind.”
The letter said the church “received reports of a number of incidents of inappropriate behavior” after Haggard’s fall. “In each case, we have tried our very best to do the right thing each time, including disciplinary action when appropriate.”
Boyd said the “inappropriate behavior” referred to the man who was the volunteer involved with Haggard. After Haggard’s fall, another church staff member resigned after admitting to what was described as “sexual misconduct.”
Boyd said the church will not take action against the man if he tells his story in the press.
“We have legal standing to do that, but not the desire to,” he said.
Boyd said he had spoken to the man once and came away with the impression that he was speaking out because of the documentary. “I think what caused this young man to be a bit aggravated was Ted being seen as a victim, when he himself had experienced a great deal of hurt,” Boyd said. “I seriously doubt this man would have come forward if the documentary had not been made.”
A spokeswoman for the documentary, “The Trials of Ted Haggard,” declined to comment Friday.
David Clohessy, national director of SNAP, the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests — which has largely focused on the Catholic sexual abuse scandal but also speaks out on cases involving Protestant clergy — said the new disclosures about Haggard are more disturbing because they involves a church volunteer.
“Technically, legally, they were both adults,” Clohessy said. “Psychologically and emotionally, Haggard was dramatically more powerful. … By definition, any sexual contact between a congregant and minister is inherently abusive and manipulative.”
In an AP interview this month before an appearance in front of TV critics in California, Haggard described his sexuality as complex and something that can’t be put into “stereotypical boxes.”
It’s been almost a year since I last commented about Ted Haggard and the heartbreaking situation he is in. I think it’s a shame that his church is so invested in keeping their public image intact that they pressured him to confess ’sexual immorality’, but would not encourage or allow him to publicly acknowledge that he is homosexual. I think it’s a travesty. It’s shameful that they did not allow him to just be honest and “come out”, so that he and his wife could get on with their lives. Their insistence on him being ‘counseled’ and ‘restored’ was nothing short of bullying and abuse. Maybe they actually believed in what they did to him, I don’t know, but it was morally wrong.
It is clear that Mr. Haggard has spent his life trying to succeed in a world where he would never have had a chance if he had been honest about his sexuality. It’s a shame, because his humiliation has surely been scalding and jagged. And, his poor family has been dragged through a terrible mess. It could have been so different if he had been allowed to acknowledge and accept his sexual orientation from an early age. This past year could have been different, too, if he had been encouraged to be honest with himself and his wife rather than being pressured by the anti-gay forces all around him to deny his sexuality and reinforce the ‘heterosexual’ lie he has tried to live.
I also think it’s a shame that he has chosen to present himself as the ‘victim’. He IS a victim, in a way, but not in the way he says. I totally believe that forcing a person to live a lie is a horrible abuse. It is clear that Ted Haggard did not choose to be attracted to men, but he is. It is clear that this man has struggled to deny his attraction to men. But, his belief system requires him to believe NOT that it is his God-given sexual orientation, but rather, that it is a sin that God hates. I don’t doubt that he has been a victim in his life, most likely of emotional abuse that was great enough to force him to hide from himself. Until recently, he succeeded in his hiding his sexuality, at least publicly. But, because of the lie he forced himself to live, he chose ’sexual immorality’ rather than honesty with himself and his wife.
I am not, in any way, saying that a married person should cheat on his or her spouse. I do, however, believe that people whose sexual orientation is one of attraction to their own sex, who are with an opposite-sex partner, have an obligation to be honest with themselves and their partners. If you realize, or finally face the fact, that you are attracted to others of your own sex, you have every reason to be honest with yourself first and then your partner. It is wrong to live a lie and cheat on the person who loves you. Treating the heterosexual partner with dignity and respect requires that he or she be allowed to know what is going on, so they can decide whether or not they want to remain in the marriage.
I realize that people who are homosexuals, in a marriage that is between a man and a woman, are sometimes there because they never really understood that their same-sex attraction was part of who they were, not just some ’sin nature’. If preachers spent as much time talking about adultery and divorce, greed and gossip and gluttony, disrespect of women and abuse of women and children as they spend trying to spin homosexual sexual orientation into a sin-of-all-sins, there’d be a lot different in the church and in the world. One better, how about if preachers were to start talking about love for our neighbors, for the downtrodden, for the poor, for the sick, for the imprisoned? How about if preachers started talking about how we can show mercy and grace in the world rather than trying to make one group of people into monsters who are the face of evil?
Heterosexuals are people. Homosexuals are people. People. Heterosexuals form their primary love relationships with adults of the opposite sex. Homosexuals form their primary love relationships with adults of the same sex. It’s a tragedy and a travesty that people use religion to try to beat people into not being who they are, to the point of thousands (hundreds of thousands?) of ‘heterosexual’ marriages being formed by couples where at least one of the partners is trying his or her best to be what is expected and required by the church or trying to please the family.
Imagine a world where every man and woman is respected as he and she is, a world where heterosexual couples can marry the person they love (as already exists) and same-sex couples are seen as two people who love each other, too, two people who can commit their lives to each other just as the opposite-sex couples already can. People are people. Love is love. Two adults who love each other and want to form a lifetime commitment to each other should be able to do that. They should be able to live just like any other couple, able to talk about their spouses, put up the family photos at work and be fully accepted in society and everyday life, at work, in the neighborhood, and most definitely at church.
In that kind of world, a world of respect and equality for all, there would never have to be tortured souls who are trying their best not to be who they are, trying their best to live a ‘heterosexual life’ when they are not heterosexual at all, people who are emotionally abused and blackmailed by the powers-that-be into totally denying who they are and dragging other people (spouses and children) through the emotionally tortured lives they lead.
Mr. Haggard, stop listening to those who are trying to cover up your poor choices for the sake of protecting their reputations. Be honest with yourself and your wife. Give your wife a chance to move on with her life if she wants to. Give yourself a chance to breathe one breath that feels honest. God does not hate you for who you are. God made you the person you are deep down. You’ve been scarred and twisted by beliefs and circumstances and choices. But, who you are at the core is someone who is loved by God. That is what you believe isn’t it? It’s time to start believing that and living that truth.
Your words are right on, DHconcerts. I could not have said it better myself.

Ted Haggard and the Sexual Gossip Factor
.
Most of the stories about Ted Haggard seem to focus on the gossip factor about Ted Haggard, a formerly powerful evangelical Christian figure, and his sexual involvement with another man. Now the story has expanded to include his involvement with yet another man, a younger man. And, it it is even bigger gossip because his former church tried to cover it all up with ‘hush’ money.
.
Living a Lifetime of Lies
.
For me, the real story is about how Ted Haggard’s life was shaped, and done great damage, by a belief system that forced him to live a lie. And how even now, in the face of acknowledging his attraction to men, he still continues to believe what he was taught, and what he taught others, that it is not okay for a man to love another man, and that homosexuals are sinners who need to change and be heterosexual.
.
Sin Nature vs. Same-Sex Sexual Orientation
.
Ted Haggard spent his life living a lie. After years of inner turmoil, that lie (believing his attraction to men was his sin nature rather than a same-sex sexual orientation) blew up in his face. Rather than encouraging him to be honest about his sexual orientation, Mr. Haggard’s church leaders used their power to continue to emotionally abuse him (a man who already believed he was ‘broken’ and a ‘loser’ because of what he had been taught about same sex attraction).
.
Ted Haggard’s Church Leaders Inflicted More Emotional Abuse
.
The loving thing to do would have been for the church leaders to encourage and allow Ted Haggard to be honest with himself and his family, so that he and his family could move on with their lives. Instead, Mr. Haggard’s church leaders continued to inflict the emotional abuse he has lived with throughout his life. I am sure that much of Mr.Haggard’s anti-gay sentiment is internalized. But, the people he trusted, the powerful leaders in his church, pressured him to continue his dishonesty and self-deception, telling him he needed ‘counseling’ and ‘restoration’ rather than allowing him to be honest and breathe free.
.
“There Is No Such Thing As Homosexuality, Only Homosexual Behavior”
.
What was initially strange to me about this story was … everything? But, I talked with a gay man who grew up in a fundamentalist family. He explained the thought process and belief-system to me. He said that Ted Haggard believes he is a heterosexual man who just happens to be sinfully attracted to men. I never understood that mindset before he explained it to me. He said the fundamentalists do not even believe there is any such thing as homosexuality. They just believe gay people are sinful heterosexuals. That is why they talk so much about ‘homosexual sin’.
.
The Ex-Gay Movement Is Abusive and Manipulative
.
I believe Ted Haggard’s church has done great violence to him, and also to their many followers who try not to be gay, by pushing their everyone-is-heterosexual-and-homosexuality-is-nothing-more-than-sin agenda. The ex-gay movement, in my opinion, is abusive and manipulative. It verbally and emotionally destroys people and then tells them they can be okay if they will just try to change and be like the abusers say they should be. It is not legitimate. It is not honest. It is not loving. It is abusive and destructive and should have no place in the church. (WWJD? What would Jesus do? Jesus would certainly NOT have anything to do with the ‘ex-gay’ teaching done by these churches.)

I wrote about Ted Haggard’s troubles when they first became public. I have recently added a comment to the end of the comments section on that first post. The two posts I currently have up about Mr. Haggard are “Ted Haggard Is Completely Heterosexual” – a song by Roy Zimmerman and Ted Haggard Is NOT REALLY Completely Heterosexual.

Someone responded to this post (the comment just above this one, the one I posted as a comment to the HuffPost article) by saying,
This is my reply to that person’s comment:
Yes, of course. Haggard is an adult. It is his responsibility to be honest. I completely agree with you. But, that’s not my point.
This is a man whose religious background taught him that people are heterosexual, and there is no such thing as being homosexual. I am not making excuses for his lies, poor choices or attacks from the pulpit on gay people.
I am saying I believe he is still tormented, and still allows his decisions to be guided, by the oppressive belief-system that was put on him as a child. He still allows those church leaders to bully him. They still have some influence over him, if only to make him hate himself more and feel like more of a loser.
I believe the leaders in the church are wrong to condemn him for his sexuality and demand that he hide even deeper in his closet. If they are really all about God’s love, they should help him stop lying. If they are really his friends, they should support him and encouraged him to come clean.
They wanted him to say he was a sinner, not a homosexual. The former keeps him down, because those feelings are not going away. The latter would allow him to be honest and start a new life.
Everyone needs support from friends and the people who love them. He got none of that from his peers. All he got was judgment and encouragement to continue living a dishonest life.
There is quite a bit of discussion going on over at Huffington Post related to their post about the ‘new allegations’ of Ted Haggard having gay sex. Most of the commenters say he needs to just come out of the closet.

I was responding to this comment:
My reply:
SethBLiNK, I agree with you. These two men were not born hating themselves or other gay people. They were taught to be self-hating and ashamed. That shame and self-hatred influenced everything else.
I believe they both have probably always been afraid to be open and honest about this (and still are). All the anti-gay work they have done was, the way I imagine it, a way for them to say to themselves and others, “I’m not like them!”

Quoting me:
Someone said:
To which I replied:
Correct, that’s the way most people see it.
But, according to the formerly-fundamentalist equal rights activist guy who explained it to me, there is no such thing as homosexual (in fundamentalist theology). There are only heterosexuals committing sins of ‘homosexual acts’.
There is no recognition of sexual identity and same-sex attraction as being legitimate. They only see it as a sinful desire that some heterosexual people have. Looking at it that way, it makes sense why they are so afraid for gay people to be accepted and recognized and given equal rights, because it would legalize and make acceptable ’sinful desires’.
