I have a relative who seems to get all of her news from The Flat Earth Society and The End of the World Club. I asked her to stop sending me Swift Boat types of emails before the last election, and she did for awhile. But now, she seems to either think I believe as she does, or she is out to convert me. Her talking points come straight out of the inflammatory rhetoric of the right-wing-talk-radio/tv shouters and the sky-is-falling-the-end-is-near ‘religious’ groups who call themselves Christian (but, whose behavior in no way exemplifies the teachings or life of Christ).

.

Today she sent yet another high-blood-pressure, red-faced-ranting “save America” email. I finally took the bait and responded. I’ll quote my reply to her. This is what I wrote:

.

you say: “If Obama is elected president of the United States we are in trouble.”

.

my reply:
No matter who is elected president, our country is in trouble after the damage that has been done by the current administration over the past eight years. No Republican or Democrat will be able to clean up the mess in the next four years. Our reputation, our economy and our personal freedoms have all been diminished by the corrupt and unethical actions of the current administration. No one, no matter how good or competent, will be able to undo the damage that has been done. Our nation is now in so far in debt, due to a war that was started based on lies and for the purpose of enriching the cronies of the current administration, that even your great great grandchildren will still be paying the debt. (And, if McCain is elected and continues this war, your grandsons may very well be drafted to go over there and fight.) Some economists believe our economy is on the verge of collapse due to the actions of this admin. over the past 8 years. If it happens in the next four years, you should hope there is a Democrat in office, so that you can blame them for the damage that has been done by the ones currently in power.

.

I wonder how many hearts or brains die because of politics (when the blood pressure goes too high and stays too high in people who are already at risk for heart attack and stroke). I’ve already lost one long-time friend this year, because I answered the question, “Who are you going to vote for?” and then gave my opinion about the corruption of the current administration. I had no idea this friend was a die-hard supporter of said administration.

.

I believe we in this country are in grave danger no matter who is elected. Our economy is in trouble. Our military is over-extended. Our basic freedoms have been compromised. I don’t know what, or who, it will take to turn this country around. It is true that Obama does not have much experience. What he offers is hope and a vision. I hope he is surrounded by good people. McCain is scary, because he looks like he’ll continue the destruction of our country by continuing business as usual.

.

Is there a way to repair the damage that has been done over the past two terms? What do you think?

Mayor Gavin Newsom made Martin and Lyon the first couple he married in recognition of their long history of working for lesbian rights. Here, Newsom, right, introduces the newlywed couple to the media after they exchanged vows in a private ceremony in San Francisco City Hall. Martin is shown using a wheelchair, which her new wife is pushing.

Madame Zipdrive has a way with words, so I’ll just post a few of her comments about Michelle Obama‘s Speech to the 2008 Democratic National Convention:

I didn’t used to like Michelle Obama.
I thought her outspokenness and innate scowl would ruin Barack Obama’s election chances.
I was wrong.
She’s dynamic, strong, poised, and doggone it, people like her.

.

The Obama family is about as Leave it to Beaver as we can get. They are young, vibrant, loving and smart.
They would bring life back into the White House, and I somehow trust that each morning when Barack leaves the White House residence to walk over to the West Wing, he’s got something to energize him and keep him on the right track.
I think it’s time we get a smart, happy guy in the White House.

.

We’re still the most powerful country on Earth, and although our might has been diminished by mishandling, we still have nothing to fear. We can still afford to behave less like terrorized victims and more like self assured, benevolent giants.
I want a diplomatic president who understands that war is a last option. I want a president who lives in the present and looks forward to the future

Dr. Clarissa Pinkola Estes did was not impressed by the MSM’s coverage of the speech made Monday night by the future First Lady. She had a few choice words. I’ll quote her closing comments:

You know, in a way, these comments, many of them by black commentators as well as people of other RGB certified skin colors, do to Michelle, what some evangelicals do to God: reduce the incandescent to what is more easily ‘handle-able’… just life-sized filament, manageable low wattage, well-behaved, no surprises, therefore no creative fire. Like themselves. More or less.

Leaderly women ought not have to be held under a microscope to be seen in all their actual magnitude, ought they? I wonder what strange rite we have in our culture that insists accomplished women must diminutize themselves in order to fit the mold/casket already custom-made for them… by minds smaller than their own?

This was from one of those chain letter emails. I know some of these are correct. I need to look up the rest. Please leave comments with any more information you have about these foods.

“These are best & more powerful when eaten raw.”

.

A sliced Carrot looks like the human eye. The pupil, iris and radiating lines look just like the human eye… and YES, science now shows carrots greatly enhance blood flow to and function of the eyes.

.
A Tomato has four chambers and is red. The heart has four chambers and is red. All of the research shows tomatoes are loaded with lycopine and are indeed pure heart and blood food.

.
Grapes hang in a cluster that has the shape of the heart. Each grape looks like a blood cell and all of the research today shows grapes are also profound heart and blood vitalizing food.

.
A Walnut looks like a little brain, a left and right hemisphere, upper cerebrums and lower cerebellums. Even the wrinkles or folds on the nut are just like the neo-cortex. We now know walnuts help develop more than three (3) dozen neuron-transmitters for brain function.

.
Kidney Beans actually heal and help maintain kidney function and yes, they look exactly like the human kidneys.

.
Celery, Bok Choy, Rhubarb and many more look just like bones. These foods specifically target bone strength. Bones are 23% sodium and these foods are 23% sodium. If you don’t have enough sodium in your diet, the body pulls it from the bones, thus making them weak. These foods replenish the skeletal needs of the body.

Avocadoes, Eggplant and Pears
target the health and function of the womb and cervix of the female – they look just like these organs. Today’s research shows that when a woman eats one avocado a week, it balances hormones, sheds unwanted birth weight, and prevents c e rvical cancers. And how profound is this? It takes exactly nine (9) months to grow an av! ocado from blossom to ripened fruit. There are over 14,000 photolytic chemical constituents of nutrition in each one of these foods (modern science has only studied and named about 141 of them).

Figs are full of seeds and hang in twoos when they grow. Figs increase the mobility of male sperm and increase the numbers of Sperm as well to overcome male sterility.

.
Sweet Potatoes look like the pancreas and actually balance the glycemic index of diabetics.

.

Olives assist the health and function of the ovaries

Oranges, Grapefruits, and other Citrus fruits look just like the mammary glands of the female and actually assist the health of the breasts and the movement of lymph in and out of the breasts.

Onions look like the body’s cells. Today’s research shows onions help clear waste materials from all of the body cells. The y even produce tears which wash the epithelial layers of the eyes. A working companion, Garlic, also! helps eliminate waste materials and dangerous free radicals from the body.

My grandmothers have been gone for years. I still think of them often.

.

In 2002, I wrote a group of songs about animals, wanting to tell stories in the style of fables and fairy tales. After I wrote Little Snow Goose, my mom asked if I had written it about her mom. The question surprised me, because I had not done it consciously. But, the story clearly matches my experience with her.

.

If she were still alive, my dad’s mom would have been 111 today.

.

My grandmothers made this world a better place simply by being a part of it. They were both great sources of joy for me. Both are gone. I think of them often.

I work in a job that is almost always physically exhausting. Most days, it also affects me inside, too, in a soul and spirit kind of way. The last time I was at work, two days ago, I cried little more than an hour into my shift.

.

I love my job. I really enjoy the connection I have with the people I serve. I see the sadness of others every day, and that sadness touches me deeply. Just a week or two ago, I wondered if I was too deeply affected by it. I was feeling sad much of the time when I was away from work. I’m okay again now. I don’t know what changed. Maybe “just to know it” is enough. Maybe it’s enough to know that what I see, hear, do, feel and experience each day in my work has a profound effect on me.

.

So what about the 5 fruits, 7 hours and 17 minutes? In this physically exhausting, emotionally moving work day, I am expected to stop working twice for 30 minutes to have a meal. There really is not enough time to stop, because there is always more work to do. But, we are not paid for that hour, and we are expected to take it away from work. I’m sure that is a very good idea, since the work is as I have described.

.

The last time I worked, two days ago, the same day I cried with a family 60 minutes into my 12 hour shift, I looked at a healthy living article in the July 2008 issue of Prevention magazine I found in the break room. I read it while I sat with my feet up and ate food I’d brought from home. The article was about how some of us women believe we must (try to) be perfect. And, if we can’t be perfect, we’ll not even try.

.

The author gave examples. If we can’t eat the right foods, we won’t even try to eat the right foods. If we can’t exercise enough, we won’t even try to exercise. I know that feeling. So, I appreciated the ‘good enough’ approach the author took in the article.

.

I like the ‘good enough’ approach in life, too. I like the idea that it’s okay not to be perfect. It’s okay to be ‘good enough’. That doesn’t mean I don’t try. It means it’s okay not to beat myself up for not being perfect. And, if I can improve in some way, it’s okay to try again to do better tomorrow. ‘Good enough’ can apply to just about every area of life. I think it is a belief that might very well be a life-saver for some people.

.

So, back to the 5, 7 and 17. You’ve probably figured it out by now. We’re ‘supposed’ to eat 9, count ‘em, NINE, servings of fruit every day. I like fruit, but that sounds like even more than I want to eat. So, the ‘good enough’ answer is that eating just FIVE servings of fruit each day will cut a woman’s risk of heart attack and stroke by over 30%. That sounds good to me. That sounds very good, since women in this country die from heart disease more than from any other reason. (Someone, please check my facts! I believe this is true, but it’s time for bed, I have to get up at 5am!).

.

My need to get to sleep soon gives me the perfect transition to the number 7. We’ve been told we need 8 or 9 hours of sleep. How many of us do that? I know I don’t when I have to get up early! According to the article, we’ll be okay if we get seven hours of sleep each night. But, they said, if we only get 5 or 6 hours, we are subject to all sorts of bad things (like impaired judgment). This is not news to anyone is it? But, the ‘good enough’ part is a good reminder that we can take care of ourselves even if we don’t do it perfectly.

.

The last number was 17. That’s the ‘good enough’ number for exercise. We all know we’re ‘supposed’ to exercise 30 minutes a day for 5 days every week. Some of us do. Some of us don’t. The article said that studies have shown that if we can exercise even 17 minutes a day, we’ll be healthier and reduce our risk of stroke and heart disease. Seventeen minutes a day sounds like a walk around the block. A walk I’m willing to take if it leads me to a healthier heart and brain.

.

Oh yes, and there was another ‘good enough’ bit you might like. It said we should exercise at our own pace, whatever feels comfortable to us. It said that women who are pushed to do a faster, or more strenuous, form of exercise are more likely to just give up. Back to that perfect or nothing way of thinking. The ‘good enough’ thinking says we are just fine doing what we are able as we are able. And if, in the midst of a ten minute leisurely walk, we speed up for 30 seconds, it’s that much better and gives our hearts an extra boost.

.

We spend our lives feeling like we are not good enough, because we know we are not perfect and we never will be, no matter how hard we try. It’s time we stop, take a deep breath, relax for a few minutes and remember it’s okay just to be ‘good enough’.
