… my main purpose in having this web page and uploading songs is to make something that has been meaningful to me available to others, with the possibility that it might be meaningful to them …
This morning, I was thinking about something I wrote in an earlier post. I said, At some point, a few years back, I came to the conclusion that what I write fits in the FOLK MUSIC category better than anywhere else. And, I starting thinking maybe that’s where I need to promote my music. By ‘promote’, I really mean ‘share’ my music, because beyond the joy of creating, the only real purpose for having the songs would be to share them with others. I’ve been saying this same thing recently to friends and family, too.
This morning, when I was thinking about these things I’ve been saying, it suddenly all came into focus. If my purpose in ‘putting myself out there’ again, by creating this web page and uploading songs, is to make my songs available to as many people as possible, then that really IS my purpose. That’s the bottom line. If my main purpose in having this web page and uploading songs is to make something that has been meaningful to me available to others, with the possibility that it might be meaningful to them, then I can do a lot of that right here.
I have several CDs of music I recorded a few years ago. They also are voice and guitar recordings, but the recording quality is better than this first group I’ve posted recently. I don’t yet know how to change them from an audio CD format back to the type of file needed to upload to the internet, but I’ll figure it out soon.
When I get it figured out, I’ll upload songs from each of those CDs. I won’t put them all online, but I’ll upload a lot of them. With this new plan, as I find previously recorded (and already copyrighted) songs I’ve written, I’ll upload them and make them available for others.
As I write and record and copyright new songs, I’ll do the same thing. By uploading more and more of my songs, I’ll be able to work towards finding that balance between creation (where I am the one who is allowed to enjoy the gift of the new song) and sharing them with others (so others can find the songs that have meaning for them in their own lives).
I have to say I’ve been very happy with a number of my recent songs. I’ve written more ‘story’ songs than ever. And, I’ve been writing from as many angles as I can find … happy, sad, angry, reflective and narratives.
Since this is a web log about my music, it seems fitting to spill out these thoughts and put them into the “Thoughts about Creating and Performing” category. I am looking forward to having the opportunity to share more of my songs with you soon.
