(Anecdote and lyrics are below the fold.)
Do you remember that song?
.
I don’t remember a specific time in my life that was linked to that song. But, I remember the song. It’s simple. It’s singable. It has a message.
.
I find it amazing that some of us are worriers and some are not. It’s so odd to me that some of us just seem to be natural optimists and happy about everything, and some of us are worriers and fret about things that will probably never happen.I tend to fall on the worry side of the scale. My mom says people should only worry about things they can do something about, and all the rest is wasted. She’s a wise woman, and much less worried about things than I usually am. I try to be that way when I think of it.
.
One day when I was feeling especially generous with myself, not making myself ‘accomplish’ something, I found some yellow paint, some orange paint, some small brushes and some clothes pins.I don’t know why I wanted to do this, but I decided to paint the clothes pins. So, I painted one side of each pin yellow and the other side orange. Then, I painted orange words on the yellow side and yellow words on the orange side.
.
I painted “DON’T WORRY!” on one side, and “BE HAPPY!” on the other side.I’m not sure what I thought I was going to do with them. But, I use them around the house. It’s good to be reminded.
Today, my 8 year old neighbor saw the words “DON’T WORRY!” and asked, “What’s that?” I turned over the clothespin, and she read, “BE HAPPY!”
She still had no clue what the reference was. So, I started singing the song to her. I told her about the Bobby McFerrin song and found a performance on youtube.com, so she could hear the whole song.
I think it’s a great song. It’s simple. It has a happy feel to it. It’s easy to sing. It gets stuck in the mind, and plays over and over.
Here’s what wikipedia.com says about the song:

The cover of the Bobby McFerrin single Don’t Worry Be Happy
‘“Don’t Worry, Be Happy” is the title and famous principal lyric of a song by popular musician Bobby McFerrin, the first a cappella song to reach number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, holding that position for two weeks in September of 1988. At the 1989 Grammy Awards, “Don’t Worry Be Happy” won ‘Best Song of the Year‘. The song’s title is taken from a famous quote by Meher Baba.[1] The original music video stars Robin Williams and Bill Irwin.
Now, you’ll be singing the song all day long, too. 🙂 Here are the words and chords for you to use, too. (the formatting is a little messed up, the chords go above the words they’re in the middle of in this post.)

I just had a very interesting visit with a guy who lives on the “Don’t Worry, Be Happy” side of the spectrum. He came to my house to make repairs. While he was here, we started talking.
He’s very easy going, good natured, laid back, positive … I asked if he’s always been that way. He said yes, for the most part. He also told me about his wife of over 3 decades who died a few years ago. He told about their relationship and his love for her. And, he told me about his new wife and about how he never thought he would love again and how happy he is.
He said his attitude since his wife’s death has been, “What can anyone do to me?” He said nothing can ever hurt him the way losing her hurt him. He doesn’t let the small problems in life get to him. He just walks in the sunshine every day, and lives on the sunny side of the street. He said he originally got that approach to life from his dad who was also that way.
It’s nice to see that way of being. I am too hard on myself sometimes, too critical if I don’t measure up to my expectations for myself. It was neat to be around someone who exudes contentment and well-being. That was pretty cool. 🙂
DON’T WORRY, BE HAPPY by Bobby McFerrin
Here is a little song I wrote
You might want to sing it note for note
Don’t worry be happy
In every life we have some trouble
When you worry you make it double
Don’t worry, be happy……
Ain’t got no place to lay your head
Somebody came and took your bed
Don’t worry, be happy
The land lord say your rent is late
He may have to litigate
Don’t worry, be happy
Look at me I am happy
Don’t worry, be happy
Here I give you my phone number
When you worry call me
I make you happy
Don’t worry, be happy
Ain’t got no cash, ain’t got no style
Ain’t got not girl to make you smile
But don’t worry be happy
Cause when you worry
Your face will frown
And that will bring everybody down
So don’t worry, be happy (now)…..
There is this little song I wrote
I hope you learn it note for note
Like good little children
Don’t worry, be happy
Listen to what I say
In your life expect some trouble
But when you worry
You make it double
Don’t worry, be happy……
Don’t worry don’t do it, be happy
Put a smile on your face
Don’t bring everybody down like this
Don’t worry, it will soon past
Whatever it is
Don’t worry, be happy
