Harvey Milk, the 1970s San Francisco Mayor.
Part 2 –
The assassination of Harvey Milk seems like a long time ago. Times have changed. Still, some things have stayed the same. This country seems to have moved forward in many way (in spite of the many ways we’ve been pulled down by events over the past eight years).
I say we’ve moved forward as a country, in spite of poor ‘leadership’. As evidence, I look to the wide-ranging support for Barack Obama and his election to be the next President of the United States. I am encouraged by this change. I have to remember that over 40% of the voters did not vote for hm, and he is being slandered daily and racial violence by hate groups and individuals is up (by people who did not want an African-American man as President of the United States).
In the USA, marriage equality has been in place for several years in Massachusettes without causing any destruction of marriage to heterosexual couples. In spite of that evidence, anti-gay (“pro-marriage”) groups (mostly anti-gay religious groups) were recently successful in getting Prop 8 passed in California (undoing the recent equality ruling put forth by a conservative court). Two steps forward, one step back?
