Harvey Milk, the 1970s San Francisco Mayor.
Part 3 –
I heard a PFLAG parent say (a few years ago) that the minds of older people will not be opened (to the lives and loves of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender people), at least not in large numbers. This parent said change will come as new generations are born and grow up with more of an open mind and acceptance toward all. I see that more and more. Maybe it’s simply because the world continues to change.
When I was in elementary school, there was only one child whose parents were divorced. I was never in school with more than one race until I reached the ninth grade. There was a “black side of town” and a “white side of town” when I was growing up. There were also separate facilities, but I was too young to realize that until later. As for gay people, the standard when I was growing up was that homosexuality was a mental illness (according the the mental health diagnostic tools) and homosexuals were sinners who were going to hell (according to many religious groups). Yes, I guess the world has changed some.
